The GFKC members were treated to an enlightening and engaging discussion of Shiba Inus at an educational seminar held in conjunction with the monthly meeting on December 1, 2022. Member Gigi Rowland, who has owned Shiba Inus to nearly 30 years, described the features of this rare breed from Japan that was imported to the US in 1973. The Shiba Inu was accepted by AKC into the Miscellaneous Class in 1992 and the Non-Sporting Group in 1993.
The presentation was highlighted by Gigi and her young Shiba Inu, Gracie, standing proudly on a table as the star of the show. Loved by all who've met her, Gracie's demeanor is not a typical representation of the breed. Gracie, like other Shibas, can be stubborn while at the same time charming.
Although Shibas can be a challenge to train, their size, looks and independence can be part of their attraction. Their temperament is described as "spirited boldness", reserved, intelligent, and with a strong hunting instinct. Inus can be somewhat dog aggressive and vocal with a screaming yodel.
Dog aggression is not a characteristic Gigi has observed in Gracie who seems to love to interact with all other dogs. Socialization and obedience training at an early age are imperative for success.
Finding the right breed of dog is a personal choice. For Gigi, Shiba Inus have provided many years of interest, fun, love, and challenge.
