Beginner/Intro to Scentwork

The nose knows! Scentwork is a fun sport for all types of dogs. This introductory class will help you teach your dog to use natural instincts to locate a specific odor. You will gain an understanding of scent detection, develop handling and observational skills, practice searching for a specific odor, and learn about the use of equipment and the handling of odors. Scentwork builds confidence and works your dog's mind,

Equipment Needed:

- Lots of high value treats with a strong odor (like cheese) sealed tightly in a bag or jar

- Dogs should be on a flat collar or harness - no prong or e-collars or head halters

- Six foot leash -  not retractable

 Class meets Wednesdays 6-7 PM, starting February 5 - March 12, 2025.

Scent Work 2

The nose knows more! This class is for scent detection teams who have completed Introduction to Scent Work. We will build on the foundational skills learned in the beginner class and engage in more difficult searches of interior spaces and AKC buried hides. If the weather is agreeable, we may search exterior areas as well. AKC Handler Discrimination will be introduced. We will look more into scent theory, practice skilled handling, and focus on "reading" our dogs' communication as they search. By the completion of this class, teams can expect to be trial-ready in containers, buried, and interior elements. Of course, competing is not mandatory; scent work is interesting, fun, and enriching during these cold months.

Class meets Wednesdays 2 - 3 PM with another class Wednesdays 4:45 - 5:45 PM, starting February 5 - March 12, 2025.
